Many people wonder about what is the best gear to equip and what they should spend any gold they might have on. It is mostly dependent on what you plan to make you main action type i.e. harass/sabotage/bribe etc. Here is a link to a fantastic list which gives the best and second best items that you can have for your main character in each action type.

(Please note: this list is quite old now and doesn't include dragons beyond the baby dragons. A dragon is better than any other companion but of course there is a long road to evolving one. Also the list does not include the 'Epic' items that can now be crafted in the Holdfast and Workshop, nor the newest 'Epic' items that can be crafted in the Tourney Arena when you earn enough tokens. Most of these items are better than the ones on this list but they cannot be bought with gold as these on the list can)
If you do not have gold to spend or if you want to equip your army of ss then here is another excellent list of items that are earned as rewards from adventures. The list tells you which items are the best you can get from adventures in each of the nine action types.
